On a day like today, but 20 years ago, the Soviet-Afghan War ended.

The Soviet-Afghan War (Also known as the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan) took place between April 1978 and April 1992, at which time the marxist Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (Supported between December 1979 and February 1989 by the Soviet Union) clashed with the Mujahideen insurgents (Supported by the United States and its allies in the context of the Cold War).

After more than 9 years of war, the Soviets withdrew in 1989, as a result of the Geneva Accords between Pakistan and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (It's estimated that the Soviet intervention left about 1.5 million dead and about 5 million refugees, thus becoming the bloodiest Invasion of Afghanistan of all).

However, clashes between insurgents and government troops continued until April 1992, when the dissolution of the Soviet Union led to the economic collapse of the country and the fundamentalists were able to establish the Islamic State of Afghanistan.
