Welcome back. Belfry towers of the Old World (Built pre-1900, some MUCH earlier) will be the topic of the video today. More specifically, we will focus on the 56 World Heritage Site protected belfry towers of France and Belgium. These Old World Towers are of particular interest as they are said to be “civic” buildings, or were originally built with no feudal, or religious affiliation.

Many of these belfry towers were lost to time, while others were converted into cathedrals and more modern buildings. A few of these towers stand alone, while others appear to have had walls, buildings, and even entire communities constructed around them. The belfry tower, as the name might suggest, was an ancient form of bell tower, which often served as the town hall, or center of the community that surrounded it.

We will look through these belfry towers of Old World France and Belgium, which led me to the ancient town of Belfort in France. Belfort is absolutely fascinating. Looking into the ancient fortifications of Belfort we have roughly 1000 years of confirmed occupation, with advancements being made at key intervals. The Belfort we see today, with all its underground passages, massive brick walls, and intricate design, is an amalgamation of hundreds of years of occupation and redesign (according to the current narrative, that is).

Belfort is also home to many beautiful Bell Towers. We will discuss energy, bell towers, Belfort, belfries, and their usage throughout time. I will also address some recent issues with the channel, and where I plan to go moving forward. Enjoy, and thanks for being here!
